Who is the Warriors real MVP?

The answer that immediately comes to mind would be the league MVP Steph Curry. He is undoubtedly an amazing player, leading the league in scoring, 3pt% and 3pt makes, however, is he the real key to the team’s success or is it some of his teammates who are having a greater impact on the Dubs success?

First off, Curry’s All-Star teammates and splash brother Klay Thompson may have something to say about being the team’s greatest impact player. To start with he ranks as a better defensive player, locking down some of the league’s best wings with a defensive rating of 107, ranking him well above average for his position. His shooting is absolutely knockdown, averaging 42.5% on the year, perhaps not quite to the same extent as Steph who just tops his back-court partner at 45.4%, but if either catches the ball behind the arc with an inch of daylight, it’s pretty much game over. Klay also has the ability to heat up in a hurry, giving the warriors a great option to go to on offence. The guy has a 37 point quarter which sounds pretty good on his part doesn’t it. As a side note, it may be irrelevant but in this writer’s opinion, Klay has the nicer shooting form, giving young players everywhere a great set of mechanics to copy.

The next key piece in the Warriors ‘Big Three’, would be the master of the intangibles, Draymond Green. His stats are solid but may not jump off the box score, averaging 14 PPG, 9.5 RPG and 1.4 blocks, but don’t let that fool you. If you watch any Warriors game you will see how important he is to them on both ends of the floor, being the emotional backbone of the team, playing hard defense – finishing second in Defensive Player of the Year voting – and setting hard and in the words of C. J. McCollum “illegal” screens.

Realistically, the warriors don’t need an MVP. They fit so well together as a group with great role players keeping up the high intensity, they’re just a great team. Their great success without Steph in the playoffs is a true testament to how good they really are as a unit, proving they’re more than just one player. Whether they’d shine so bright on other teams is up for debate but with the all-time record for regular season wins and a championship with the potential to repeat, that is something you can’t argue with.
